Annual Ball offers a bewitching time

Annual Ball offers a bewitching time

By Colette Anne Gehr

Times have certainly changed since the 1970’s when the mere mention of “witches” conjured up images of either “Samantha” from Bewitched or even worse, the “Wicked Witch” from The Wizard of Oz. Yet, it is time to throw out that notorious stereotype once and for all and really experience a Pagan party like never before by celebrating unified living at the annual Michigan Witches Ball. “You can expect to have an incredible time with a group of wild and crazy people, “ says Claudine Durham, ball council member. “You cannot beat the deal of $30 for all you can eat and drink, as well as an evening out with old friends and new acquaintances.”

Converting From Christianity to Pagan

Converting From Christianity to Pagan
By Yvonne Perry
I was raised Christian, but during a very difficult time in my life, I questioned my rigid belief system and found that a different path was more appealing to me. During my study to learn more about other religions, I came across a book by Scott Cunningham titled Wicca A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner.

Common Reasons Pagans Give For Choosing Paganism As A Religion

Common Reasons Pagans Give For Choosing Paganism As A Religion
By Tracy Falbe

Pagan images create feelings of freedom, excitement, and intimacy. A ring of fires blazing in the night as the moon rises...drums beating as people dry off from a ritual bath...flesh is bared and a sword is raised...Any such scenes could come from a pagan ritual, or none of them because paganism summons diversity and encourages creativity.

What is Paganism?

What is Paganism?
By Robin Blake

At its most basic, the term Paganism, is an umbrella term covering all religions that are not related to the Judeo-Christian family of religions. This would include all “Primitive” animist and polytheistic religions that are common among native groups as well as Hinduism, Buddhism and, of course the Classical religions of ancient Greece and Rome. It would also exclude all religions relating to Judeo-Christianity, including those syncretic religions popular in South America and Satanism. However, when most people say the word “Pagan”, they really mean “Neo-Pagan”. Neo-paganism is really a subset of the larger term “Pagan” and is itself an umbrella term covering a wide range of beliefs.

FAQ ON PAGANISM

FAQ ON PAGANISM
by
Gordon Ireland
What is Paganism?
The word pagan is a derivative of the Latin pagnus or "country dweller." During the initial thrust of Christianity, focus was on converting the population centers; thus, those that lived in the "country" were among the last to be converted. Later the word "Pagan" was used in derogatory terms to describe the uneducated, uncultured, or whose religious practices were other than the Christian faith.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines pagan as meaning as person who is not Christian; One who has no religion. The term "pagan" no longer applies to Judeo, Islamic, Hindu, or Buddhist religions, it is no longer considered to be politically correct to call them pagan.
